A new report by Laura Dawson for the Canadian Council of Chief Executives identifies a visa requirement for Mexican travelers as a major impediment to Canada-Mexico relations. The 2009 visa, put in place to combat bogus refugee claims, has seriously affected travel, investment and Canada’s reputation in Mexico. With Mexico poised to become the engine of growth for North America, Canada cannot afford to overlook this important relationship nor the advantages of integrated supply chains and trade rules that twenty years of NAFTA have created. The report outlines six priority areas to strengthen the trade and investment relationship. Other issues covered in the report include co-operation on the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) negotiations, improved co-ordination between Canada, the United States and Mexico on border and regulatory issues and increased co-operation in the mining and energy sectors.
