A new report on Canada-Taiwan relations by Dawson Strategic and Ciuriak Consulting argues that closer economic engagement with Taiwan makes Canada more prosperous. Taiwan is Canada’s fourth largest trading partner in Asia. It is a springboard to Asian markets and provides lucrative opportunities to commercialize Canadian R&D for global markets. But despite robust informal trade relationships, Canada has had limited formal engagement with Taiwan. In this report, Dawson and Ciuriak argue that without concerted support for Taiwan’s entry into the Trans-Pacific Partnership plus deepened bilateral engagement, Taiwan risks being shut out of one of the world’s most important trading blocs and Canada misses the competitive advantages of commercial ties with a growing, safe, and stable Asia Pacific economy.
